Blog #10: The End 12/13/2011
This internship has laid out the fabric for my future career. even though my desired field of study is architecture, before this internship, I had no experience in the field and barely knew the first thing about architecture. Now I realize that if you are interested in art and good at math than this field is a possibility. The experience here at David Baker + Partners has only further motivated me to pursue this career. I believe that what i have learned here during this time will one day help me when I am studying this field in college, and who know maybe i will intern here again or possibly look for a job here in the future. Add Comment Blog #9: Life at my WLE: Tuesday 12/13/2011
The main objective for today at my internship is presenting my desk design project that I have been working on over the past couple of weeks to some architects and designers here at the firm. I believe from the time I started that my communication regarding clarification from my mentor has improved. I am no longer hesitant to ask question if one pops into my head. What makes this a great office to work is the amount of space you have to work in. It is very open. One component that is relaxing is the constant smooth jazz that is always being lightly played in the background. however the most relaxing part is the Monthly complimentary massage provided by the firm. Blog #8: Professionalism: 11/29/2011
In order to get this internship I had the help of a middle-man, a.k.a. my adviser Mr. Wild, who communicated to the architects on my behalf. my job was to first, create a resume that accurate represented my skills, achievements, and interest. Followed by a cover letter that expressed my interest for choosing this company to intern in. The most effective way of looking for a job is identifying what you want to do and what you are willing to do. to actually get the job you must be aware of what the position requires and express that you can fill said position in a calm, polite, but still effective way. At my workplace being professional means you have to know how to give and receive good and critical feedback, and how to work with others patiently to complete whatever it is that you are doing. Blog #7: Reflection 11/22/2011
Overall I believe this internship has furthered my passion for pursuing a career in architecture. I have learned that I have the creative and persistent ability to thrive in this field. some values I picked up is to always sketch, and also to prepare for a whole lot more of school after high school. I believe this internship has tested my creativity in terms of using space and analyzing and creating an environment by considering how people can interact with it. Another value or piece of advice I picked up on was that an architecture projects take years of planning and drafting. My brief time here has given my access to the realities of an architecture career that most architects do not know until they graduate college so it definitely gives me the upper hand. Blog #6: Leadership Skills: 11/15/2011
The leadership skills I am using most at my workplace is communicating powerfully. For example when creating renditions you have to place people in certain places to communicate how a diverse population of people can make use of the environment that the projects creates. I believe I am using the leadership effectively not only when creating the renditions, but also just communicating with my mentor whether it be for clarification or otherwise. As for my mentor I noticed that her job requires you to complete projects effectively because designing requires a lot of details, also collaborating productively because it requires a team of designers in order to work on one project. Blog #5: Progress on my WLE Project 11/10/2011
Today in my WLE my main focus was my project. i decided to recreate my t.v./nightstand and redesign it into a space efficient workspace while still making it able to accommodate my television. To start I had to look at other example of desk to get my presidents. I also did this by looking at books that my mentor and another intern provided. my mentor and I, along with another intern we laid out the step architects take in the design process and procedures. Blog #4: Project Proposal 11/01/2011
On my first day at thee architecture firm, my mentor and I sat down and discussed what WLE is all about. when we came to the project we came up with the idea of Incorporating skills I am currently learning in a program called Sketch-Up in order to design something. when sitting down with my mentor and my adviser, we synthesized our ideas to come up with the project of using Sketch-Up to draft something that could be made or improved in order to improve the environment I live in. whether it be school, home, or at my WLE office. So over the course of the next week i will try to find something missing in my surroundings. after that is acknowledged, I plan to further develop my Sketch-Up skills and eventually use them to design and present and object that could be useful or have better use to myself and my community. Blog 3: MyRole 10/25/2011
I would like to say my role is an observer/ junior designer. some of my beginning task include using Photoshop to cut out live people to include in the project perspectives that my mentor is working on. I am also using tutorials to use a program called Google sketch-up which lets you create 3D images. But I think the most essential things for me is to shadow designers and architects in the office, as well as at site to get a sense of the creation process in a field I am trying to pursue. Blog 2: My Mentor 10/25/2011
My Mentors name is Chelsea Johnson. She is an Architect and designer at the Office. I know she attended U.C. Berkeley and was not interested in architecture right away. A lot of her task right now include Making perspective view of many of their current projects. I also know that art was a major key in her settling in this field. BLOG 1: My Workplace 10/25/2011
This year i am interning at David baker+Partners, which is a small architect firm located in San Francisco. For an Architecture office my workplace has been described to me as a medium size office. the layout and design of my workplace is very unique. My workplace employes architect and I believe all of them have done more than four years of college. also even though i do not know the exact number of employees I have met a lot of new architects. One strength of my office is that it is very environmentally friendly. The only weakness i can notice is that in the morning it tends to be very cold. | ArchivesDecember 2011 Categories |
